Elafonisi Beach Additional information

Elafonisi is an oblong peninsula, which often breaks in two parts by water,so it gives the impression of being a separate island. It has Some unique characteristics. Firstly, it is a Natura 2000 protected area. Secondly, an exotic beach with white sand and turquoise water, reminding of the Caribbean. Thirdly, the sand is pinkish in many places, taking its color from millions of crushed shells.

Monastery of Panagia Chrissoskalitissa

The historical Monastery of Panagia Chrissoskalitissa is located on the southwestern side of Chania. It is actually a lovely traditional settlement with a few permanent inhabitants. The white monastery lies on top of a cliff right above the beach of Elafonisi and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In addition, this monastery was built during the Venetian time. After that, it is continuously inhabited. Today, it is a famous pilgrimage site and its rooms are open to the public including a folklore museum displaying items of daily use, instruments, tools, and memorials of the Cretan Revolution.

Aspri Limni

Aspri Limni is one of the most weird beaches in Crete, that almost nobody knows. This is a small secret beach, located 500m west of Chrysoskalitissa monastery. The nearby exotic Elafonissi beach attracts thousands of visitors. However, nobody has heard of this magnificent neighboring place. The beach has fine white sand and rocks in places and sharp rocks surrounds it, reminding of a small whitish lake inside the sea.

Voulolimni

Voulolimni is located about 500m northwest of Chrysoskalitissa monastery. It is actually a small crater, surrounded by rocks, forming a small sea lake. That is to say, it is not actually a beach, but the rocky “pool” for the residents of village Chrysoskalitissa.
