Additional Information

Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas is the largest natural lake in Crete and is located in an enchanting landscape. It is located near the village Kournas, 2.5km south of the beach of Georgioupolis, 43km east of Chania. Lake Kournas and its surroundings constitute a very important ecosystem for Greece, as the wider area of Apokoronas is one of the very few areas of Crete where plenty of fresh water is stored throughout the year. The name Kournas assumedly, comes from the Arabic word kurna for “lake” or “bath”.

Vamos village

Vamos is the capital (administrative centre) of the Apokoronas district and it is located 26 km from Chania in north west Crete. it is a developing, traditional village well-hidden from the massive, mainstream tourism.

Almyrida village

Almyrida is located 23km east of Chania city. It is a very quiet resort with all basic amenities and superb sea. The unspoiled countryside and the lush oil groves around Almyrida are ideal for hiking and exploration. Just 1km to the east there is the picturesque village of Plaka, which is the largest village in the region. Plaka is famous for its healthy climate and the hospitality of the locals. The numerous sea caves of the east shores till Drapanos Cape constitute an imposing natural phenomenon.
