The Agia Triada Tzagarolon Monastery

It was built during the 17th century by two monk brothers, Ieremias and Lavrentios Tzagarolos , descendants of a Venetian family. During the revolution, which took place in 1866, the monastery was abandoned and was used again in 1877. It was used to house the revolutionaries’ meetings. The Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) monastery is located in the northwest part of the Akrotiri peninsula, 16 km from Chania. Although the community decreases, the old buildings are gradually restored and the monastery is still active with an excellent library. All the visitors are welcomed and you can buy traditional olive oil from the monks.

Katholiko monastery

Katholiko monastery is located inside the gorge Avlaki, at a short distance from the sea. It can be accessed through a stepped and carved cobbled path that starts from the monastery Gouverneto, passes near the church of Saint Anthony (Agios Antonios) and from the Cave of Panagia Arkoudiotissa and ends at the monastery Katholiko. If you keep walking to the sea, you will find yourself in a wonderful small fjord with turquoise waters, where there are the ruins of the old harbor of the monastery. The monastery complex was founded at the site of the cave where Saint John the Hermit or Xenos died during the 11th century. After the death of Saint John the Hermit, this wider inaccessible area known as Arkoudovounia became one of the most important ascetic centers in Crete. They turned the cave into a temple, which celebrates on September 20th, and the surrounding cavities were originally a refuge for hermits, while they later built some monk cells.

Beaches at Marathi

Marathi is located 17km east of Chania. It is a very popular resort in the Chania area, for families, couples and tourists alike. Marathi hosts two beautiful beaches with fine sand and shallow calm water, ideal for children. A small pier separates the beaches, and it also serves as a harbor for fishing boats and small ferries. It is well-organized with all necessary amenities nearby. Other beaches that you will visit areStavros beach, kalathas beach, tersanas beach, maxairida beach, marathi beach (for lunch), loutraki beach.
