Firstly, it is a Natura 2000 protected area. Secondly, an exotic beach with white sand and turquoise water, reminding of the Caribbean. Thirdly, the sand is pinkish in many places, taking its color from millions of crushed shells.
The historical Monastery of Panagia Chrissoskalitissa is located on the southwestern side of Chania. It is actually a lovely traditional settlement with a few permanent inhabitants. The white monastery lies on top of a cliff right above the beach of Elafonisi and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In addition, this monastery was built during the Venetian time.
